Assigment 4

WARNING

1.Definition Warning
A warning means giving information of the danger or unexpected situation that my happen if a person does something. He/she wants that person will be more careful. When we see a snake on a tree, for example, we may shout our friends "Watch out" It means we inform them be careful and to pay attention to the snake. A warning is usually in the form of imperative, but it may occur with the modal "must" and "should"

3.-Example of Warning
1. Your little sister wants to cross the busy street. Then you warn her to cross carefully by saying,"Mind the traffic!"
2. There is a long wire connected to the computer. At present you are using your computer and your little brother is playing a toy car behind the computer. You see what he is doing and warm,"Dont touch the wire!"
3. There is blackout in the neighbourhood. A father lights a lantern and puts it on the table. His son is amazed and plays with the lantern. When the father sees, he warns,"Keep away from the fire!" or "Don't play with the lantern!"
4. You are walking on the pavement with your friends in the rain. Suddenly you see a big hole on the pavement. You want your friends by pointing at the hole and saying,"Look out!"
5. In the zoo, many cages of wild animals are applied with a warning board saying,"Beware of the wild animals!"

Puff The Magic Dragon

Once upon time,in the small city lived the little boy.Little boy named Jackie paper, who was filled with so much self-doubt and fear that he has stopped talking altogether. His parents are so concerned that they have three doctors examine him, and they say it was hopeless and that little Jackie will never talk again. Jackie returns to his room, where he sits until Puff comes to his bedroom window and started a conversation with him.

Puff invites himself in, talks to Jackie about inner happiness, and pulls a long sheet of paper out of a magic bag. He cuts the paper into a paper doll shaped like Jackie and dubs it Jackie Paper. He explained Jackie Paper can do anything and then asks he if he can put his happiness into it. After he does so, the paper doll version of Jackie comes to life, and Puff then begin to make plans to go to Hannalee, which was located in the sea. Jackie admits he was afraid. Puff then helps Jackie make a boat using things in Jackie's room, such as string, sealing wax, and the frame of his bed.

They set out onto the ocean, where they meet a boat filled with kings and princes in the shape of cards. Afterward Jackie says he was afraid of pirates after hearing about them. They then run into Very Long, a giant pirate who takes them to his island. While they await their fate, Puff says that Very Long will not be scary if they get to know him. They then view his inner desire with Puff's magic smoke rings which have the power to reveal hidden things. It reveals that Very Long secretly wishes to be a baker. Jackie then goes and asks Very Long if he can make pies, which Jackie doubts Long could. After baking dozens of pies, Very Long expresses that he always wanted to be a baker, but never believed he could do it and was afraid he couldn't change from being a pirate. Jackie prompts him to make this change, and Very Long expresses his gratitude to Jackie and Puff.

They continue their journey until they reach the starless sky, where jealous clouds block out the brightness of the stars. One of the stars falls, and Puff instructs Jackie to take the small star to the sky with the boat, which Puff gives butterfly wings. In order for the ship to fly, Puff has to get out of the boat, leaving Jackie alone to face his fears. Jackie then returned the star to sky, brightening the sky. Puff rewards Jackie with a medal for bravery.

Eventually they reach Hannalee, which, instead of a paradise, turns out to be a gloomy place. This was revealed to be the work of living sneezes that out of depression made the place gloomy to fit their mood. Puff then orders Jackie to leave, as this no place for him. After that Puff sadly walks to his cave, realizing he wasn't brave enough to defeat the sneezes. He was then reunited with Jackie, who returns with Very Long and his chicken soup to cure the living sneezes of their colds, making them happy. They then return Hannalee to its happy glory by singing.

Once this is done, Puff and Jackie go back to Jackie's room and return Jackie to his body. Puff tells Jackie that thanks to his creativity he was now a brave boy and leaves, saying he will return to visit. Jackie's parents come into the room to find Jackie happy and talking again. They then hug Jackie and express their love for him.

NARRATIVE

Social Function (Narrative):

To amuse, entertain and to deal with actual or various experience in different ways; Narratives deal with problematic events which lead to a crisis or turning point of some kind, which in turn finds 2 resolution.

Generic Structure (Narrative):

Orientation: sees the scene and introduces the participants.
Evaluation: a stepping back to evaluate the plight.
Complication: a crisis arises.
Resolution: the crisis is resolved, for better or for worse.
Re-orientation: (optional)
Coda: (optional)

language features (Narrative) / ciri-ciri kebahasaan :

* biasanya diawali dengan keterangan waktu sebagai berikut.
once upon a time, once, one day, one afternoon dan lain-lain. keterangn waktunya tidak menyatkan waktu tertentu (specific time)

* specific participant
tokoh yang ada dalam cerita adalah bersifat tertentu, tidak bersifat umum
misalnya : cinderella, the king, the farmer, jack

* penggunaan adjective (kata sifat) untuk memperjelas noun (kata benda)
misalnya digunakan untuk ungkapan berikut : a beautiful lady, an old man, a poor widow dll.

* memakai pola kalimat simpale past tense
pol kalimat yang digunakan adalah simple past karena menceritakan peristiwa yang terjadi diwaktu lampau. namun tidak menutup kemungkinan menggunakan bentuk tense lain misalnya simple present yang dipakai pada kalimat langsung.

* time conjunction / penghububg waktu
untuk menghubungkan alur satu dengan yang lain menjadi runut dan mudah diikuti.
conjunction yang sering dipakai adalah : when, then, suddenly, next dll.

* action verbs
terdapat kata kerja yang menunjukkan sebuah kegiatan (aktifitasnya bisa dilihat) misalnya : run, sleep, walk, cut dll.

* direct and indirect speech / kalimat langsung dan tak langsung
untuk membuat cerita terasa lebih hidup, digunakan pola kalimat ini agar terlihat ungkapan pembicaranya (to show the real word of speaker).

EXAMPLE (Narrative):

The Legend of Karimunjava Island

once upon a time in muria mountain, there lived the family of sunan muria. amir hasan or called as sunan nyamplungan is the son of sunan muria.

he was very spoiled by his mother. because of that, he became a naughty boy.

then his father, sunan muria asked him to study in kudus. he studied islamic religion to his uncle, sunan kudus. after some time, he became an obedient young man. sunan muria was very proud of him.

one day, sunan muria asked amir hasan to go to somewhere to spread islamic religion. his father asked him to go to an island that could be seen from muria mountain. it was on the west - north of jepara. this island seemed to be fade (kremun-kremun in javanese). and from that time, people called the island as karimunjava island.
amir hasan followed by his mate went to karimunjava island. they sailed to the island day and night and finally they reached the island. then they did what his father said. amir hasan and his people lived in the island ever after

EXPRESSING AND RESPONDING TO SYMPATHY

What is sympathy? How to express sympathy? Sympathy is feeling for someone
without specificallyunderstanding what they're feeling.
When we want to express our simpathy in English, we can use the following phrases

Giving Sympathy:
-I'm sorry to hear that.
-I'd like to express my deepest condolences.
-I'm awfully sorry about ...
-How terrible/awfull for you !
-Oh, how awfull !
-Oh, dear !
-Poor you !
-I know how's you feeling ...
-I hope your trouble and now.

Responding to Sympathy:
- Thank you for your sympathy.
- It was nothing, etc.

Ia dilatih Kungku Delapan Mata Angin oleh kakeknya. Saat kakeknya pergi ke Cina dan tak kembali selama 8 tahun. Kenji rindu akan kakeknya dan pergi mencari kakeknya di Cina.
